With the development of programming languages such as C in the early 70's the success story of the software development began. The flexibility to develop different application programs depending on the requirements was recognized soon. This was facilitated additionally by the development of compilers (YACC/LEX), because one did not have to use the cumbersome machine language any more. The introduction of microcontrollers enabled the application of software not only in workstations but also in embedded systems (e.g. in desktop calculators), which meant a strong flexibilisation. The possibility to only reprogram an industrial control system, instead of replacing the complete control system, opened up an enormous cost saving potential. In the meantime more than 90% of the manufactured processors go into embedded systems and need embedded software accordingly. |
